Mr J Mackay -
As a teacher I have always worked in South Coast schools, giving me an insight into the particular opportunities and challenges the areas offer. I began teaching as an ICT teacher in Bognor Regis covering both GCSE and A Level courses, and quickly moved over to Brighton to take on responsibility for Leading and the teaching of Computer Science. During this time, I took responsibility for an underperforming department. On leaving, the Computer Science course achieved a +0.58 progress 8 score, with 38% achieving a 9-7 result and 94% achieving 9-4 grades.
Within a few years I had moved into pastoral roles as Head of Year, then Head of Key Stage. Working within these roles, I was able to glean an insight in to complexities of supporting students as a whole and regularly worked with various outside agencies to help ensure the very best for the students I was responsible for.
I joined St Andrew’s in September 2019 and as the Head of Faculty for Technology, overseeing Design & Technology, Food Technology, Business Studies, IT and Computer Science. Soon after this I was appointed as an Associate Assistant Headteacher, assisting with Raising Standards looking at effective support and intervention which could be put in place to assist Year 11 students.
I am currently in post, having been appointed as the Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for Teaching & Learning, my role is to help facilitate the best outcomes for our students by ensuring the delivery of the highest quality of teaching and learning within the school; something I am passionate about, and I believe that my experience lends itself to.
I committed to delivering the school vision of ‘Aspiration for all, from all’, and can regularly be found talking to staff and students about achieving this.
I hold a BSc (Hons) in Cybercrime and Security, along with a Masters of Arts in Education from the University of Chichester, where my dissertation focused on the use of incentives to encourage engagement in reading. I have also previously worked with the University of Sussex in helping to deliver specialist sessions for trainee Computer Science teachers.
I love to read (sci-fi/fantasy), travelling, learning to cook new recipes, having previously played for a local rugby team, I also enjoy watching or attending matches.
